Torquemada is the most respected watchmaker in town, and by extension a very busy man. His wife, Concepcion, has found a number of ways to deal with her husband’s absences…most notably (and romantically) in the company of the poet Gonsalve, who is to arrive at any moment. But when strong and handsome Ramiro comes to the shop with a broken watch and decides to wait for Torquemada’s return, things get complicated. Mr. Lovell makes his role debut as Gonsalve under the baton of Ward Stare.
Apart from the ‘passionate love of the protagonist and the moving final act’ it was above all the ‘fusion of comedy and drama in the sumptuous 18th-century setting’ that attracted Cilea to the historical play of intrigue Adrienne Lecouvreur (1849) by Eugène Scribe and Ernest Legouvé. Compared with the other composers of the giovane scuola, Cilea’s music distinguishes itself by a greater lightness, delicacy and transparency, which does not, however, come at the expense of intensity of expression or tragic potential. Mr. Lovell appears as Poisson alongside Anna Netrebko in the title role.
In 1960, Benjamin Britten published one of the best known opera versions of the famous Shakespeare play: an amusing, light, poetic and psychological masterpiece that is one of his most played works of music theatre. Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was first heard at the opera house on the Ring in 1962; now, after more than half a century, the opera house is producing the work again. Mr. Lovell makes his house debut as Lysander in Britten's whimsical masterpiece.
It is a work charged with jealousy and intrigue, with struggles and betrayal: Ariodante, Handel’s first work for the then brand new Theatre Royal in Covent Garden. Ariodante has never been heard at the Wiener Staatsoper – but is now the second opera by the composer in the house’s repertoire, alongside Alcina. Mr. Lovell appears in the role of Lurcanio.
Mozart’s haunting final work was left sketched but incomplete at his death, commissioned by a mysterious count. Mr. Lovell appears as the tenor soloist in Mozart's unfinished masterpiece with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra alongside the University of British Columbia choir. VSO Music Director Otto Tausk appears at the rostrum.
This matinée series features ensemble members of the Vienna State Opera in song and aria recitals, offering an exciting opportunity to get to know the singers from a lesser known artistic perspective. Mr. Lovell appears in recital alongside Byrony Dwyer and pianist Anton Ziegler for an afternoon of music.
Mr. Lovell sings the leading role of Don Ramiro in Rossini's famous Cinderella tale. For many people, although La Cenerentola was written in very little time, it is the most poetic of all comic Rossini operas. In fact, at the very least in the extremely subtle musical portrayal of the characters, this opera has a singular place amongst the buffo oeuvre. Director Sven-Eric Bechtolf has transferred the action to 1950s Italy, or more precisely to a tiny fictitious nation on the Mediterranean called San Sogno, ruled by the slightly eccentric young prince Don Ramiro, who collects expensive cars.
Take an elderly bachelor Don Pasquale, who wants to try his hand at love again and a clumsy lad, Ernsto who has given up on true love. Add to this a cunning friend called Malatesta with a talent for pulling strings and scheming. And finally, sly Norina who sends people on wild goose chases and saves her relationship with Ernesto. These are the ingredients for Gaetano Donizetti’s lively comedy – vivdly staged by Irina Brook. Mr. Lovell appears in the role of Ernesto.
